Act 16:30 - And brought them out, and said, "Sirs, what must I do to be saved?"

Biography of Dub Mowery

The late brother Roy M. Henderson, a dedicated and faithful gospel preacher, baptized me in 1955 at my hometown of Idabel, Oklahoma.  He motivated me to preach my first sermon a few weeks later in March of 1955.  That fall I attended Freed-Hardeman College (now a university) in Henderson, Tennessee.  After serving in the United States Coast Guard I continued my education at Harding College in Searcy, Arkansas.

An interesting incident happened to me while in the United States Coast Guard at Cape May, New Jersey.  Each new company of sailors had to meet with one of their Chaplains.  The “protestant” chaplain met with us.  He said, “Now we know that we’re saved by accepting Jesus Christ as our Savior.”  I commenced to ask him about specific passages of scripture such as Mark 16:16 and Acts 2:38.  He didn’t seem to know how to answer me.  Obviously he had not been confronted in that manner before.  Later the young men of my company wanted me to be their chaplain.  Our petty officer thought about it and then refused to go along with the request.  However, several of my fellow Coast Guardsmen came to me to lead them in devotional services.

Charlotte Abney and I were united in marriage on June 17, 1960 by brother Henderson at Idabel.  Both of us grew up at Idabel.  I was born there and Charlotte was born in the Choctaw hospital at Talihina, Oklahoma.  My first fulltime work as a gospel preacher was at Clayton, Oklahoma beginning in 1962.  Since then I have preached for churches of Christ in Oklahoma, Texas, Arkansas, Nebraska, and Colorado.  My preaching career continues for 53 years this March, with 45 of those years as a fulltime evangelist with local congregations.  A number of my articles have been published in brotherhood periodicals, including Contending For The Faith.  Also, while attending college in Tennessee I preached for two rural congregations while attending Freed-Hardeman College.  Presently, I am in my fifth year with the church of Christ in the Pritchett community between Big Sandy and Gilmer in east Texas.  The Pritchett church of Christ had its beginning more than 150 years ago.  That congregation began in 1854.  It has also been my honor to preach in a number of Gospel Meetings and Bible Lectureships.

We have two grown sons.  Our son Paul and daughter-in-law Dianne live in Austin, Texas.  He is a draftsman engineer and Dianne teaches in the English Department of the Graduate School of the University of Texas.  Paul is our natural son.  Our foster son Lee presently lives with us.  The Lord has not blessed us with any grandchildren.
